Kit review: Alpine Parrot Ponderosa Pants

Reviewed by Emily

FEATURES
The Ponderosa Pants are made from lightly stretchy, abrasion resistant fabric, and come in some lovely colours (so nice to have options other than black!). They have what I have come to see as the gold standard for waistband adjustments - the waistband has an internal belt that is really easy to tighten or loosen. There are a good range of pockets - I particularly appreciate the thigh pocket for my phone, and there is a simple but effective button and loop that you can use to convert to capri length.

SIZE AND FIT
These trousers come in two fits - mountain and river - designed for different waist to hip ratios. I carry my weight on my hips and thighs so am wearing the River fit in a size 22. I am between a size 20 and 22 according to the size chart, and while both sizes fit and were much more comfortable than anything else I have worn I chose to size up. Interestingly this meant choosing my size according to my thigh measurement (which is included on the size chart!!!) rather than my hip (53.5 inch) or waist (43 inch) to give the maximum freedom of movement. The waistband sits really nicely on my natural waist and adjusts so securely that there is no danger of any gaping or falling down.

PERFORMANCE
These trousers are in regular rotation for me - both for every day wear and also a default when I am outdoors or camping. They are probably one of the best fitting pairs of outdoor trousers I’ve owned, and I love the slate colour. They have worn really really well - after regular use over a few months there is the slightest bit of bobbling at the inner thigh, but have stood the test in a very impressive way. The legs are slightly too long for me, and I keep meaning to shorten them a couple of inches, but for now I just wear them with a turn up. I love the thoughtful fit options, and the attention to detail to sizing really shows in how well they fit.
