Kit review: Maier Metor Waterproof Jacket

Reviewed by Steph

This jacket from German brand Maier Sports is now available in the UK from Vampire Outdoors.

FEATURES:
This waterproof jacket is PFC, and from recycled fabric, so great if you're looking for a more sustainable waterproof. The jacket has a hydrostatic head of 10,000mm so is reasonably waterproof, as well as being a good windproof layer. I also found it fairly breathable and didn't get too sweaty, even when going up hills. It has two decent sized external pockets, as well as internal pockets. The hood is detachable, but I found it a little small and disappointingly it has no wire or firm peak, so in heavy rain it wasn't the most effective.

SIZE AND FIT:
I'm wearing a European size 48 (they go up to a 52 - equivalent approx to a UK 24), for which the size chart says it will fit a 46.5 inch bust, 40 inch waist and 51 inch hip. I'm a 45 inch bust, 41 inch waist and 51 inch hip and this is a pretty perfect fit on me. It is really well proportioned, doesn't have lots of baggyness anywhere, and has plenty of room for a thick winter layer underneath. If I was just wearing it just in the summer, I could maybe size down, but I like a looser fit for laying. The proportions of it mean it's great for people who are more pear shaped and has roomier hips than most of the other jackets on the market. The sleeves are JUST about long enough on me, but I noticed in the rain that the end of my fleece got wet, so it might be an issue if you're very tall (I'm 5'10).

PERFORMANCE:
This is an incredibly comfortable jacket to wear. It's light and soft to the touch, and is one of the most comfortable waterproofs I've tried. During a day where it rained on and off throughout the day, it kept me dry, and the jacket itself dried fairly quickly too. It's a really great jacket for regular walking, but in prolonged, heavy rain I did find it wetted out and I got damp underneath - this is probably what I'd expect from the hydrostatic head rating. So perhaps not one for long, wet mountain days. But all in all, a great new option, especially for those with a pear shape!
