KIT REVIEW : Alpkit Griffon Fleece

Reviewed by Emma

A lightweight and super packable fleece is a must in your kit bag, particularly with constantly changing weather. The Alpkit Griffon gridded microfleece is designed to be warm without being bulky.

FEATURES
This fleece features a grid fleece backer, making it both cosy and functional. One thing I noticed right away is that it’s a bit longer than other mid-layers I own (for reference, I’m 5’4”), a positive feature in my view. The extra length means you can pull it down over your hips for a bit more warmth when you need it. The material is really impressive—it’s incredibly soft, warm, and yet still breathable.
Other features of this fleece are that it features Alpkit’s Polygiene anti-odour technology for less frequent washing, a snug hood that stays put in the wind, thumb loops, and a zipped chest pocket.

SIZE AND FIT
I’ve been wearing the size 20, which is Alpkit’s largest size and fits me well. Despite being a slim fit—something that typically doesn’t work for me—I found it quite comfortable as a mid-layer. According to their size guide, it’s meant for a 45-inch chest, 38-inch waist, and 48-inch hips. I have a 46-inch chest, 40-inch waist, and 47-inch hips, and it still fits comfortably with room for a t-shirt or base layer. The arms are slightly long for me but are easy to push back. I'd say this fleece would fit people comfortably who are several inches larger than me around the bust/hip.

PERFORMANCE
I’ve worn this fleece in a couple of different ways. It’s great on its own over a t-shirt, but it also layers perfectly under a waterproof jacket. I put it to the test in some seriously wet weather, and because of its longer cut, it tucked right into my waterproof trousers—keeping me warm and dry all day.
This cold, wet summer has really tested this fleece, and I’m thoroughly impressed. It’s now a must-have in my kit. Though I usually dislike thumb loops, these are discreet and easy to push back. The fleece is lightweight, warm, and breathable, keeping you comfortable in variable weather.
